Twice a year, pull the door down and do a quick walk-through.
Lubricate rollers, hinges and springs with a garage-door-specific lubricant, never WD-40. Tighten the bolts and lag screws on the track brackets. Check the bottom weather seal for cracks that let water and pests in. Test the safety reverse by placing a block of wood under the door — it should stop and reverse immediately. Finally, disconnect the opener and lift the door halfway by hand; a balanced door should stay put.
If anything on that list fails, our 25-point tune-up covers all of it in one visit.
